Je strategisch gelegen, moderne maar sfeervolle uitvalsbasis heet citizenM Washington DC Capitol, op een kwartiertje wandelen vanaf Smtihsonian Institute, een verzameling gratis toegankelijke musea. De National Mall ken je van de inauguratie van de President van de Verenigde Staten, het 1,8 kilometer lange plantsoen met de langwerpige vijver waarin het Washington Monument uit 1884 weerspiegelt: hét symbool van de stad. Maak een rondleiding door het Pentagon, het Capitool of de Library of Congress, laat je inspireren door het Lincoln Memorial en proef de sfeer in het Visitors Centre van het Witte Huis. Minstens zo indrukwekkend is het ruim negen meter hoge Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, de 'steen van hoop' gehouwen uit een 'berg van wanhoop'. Zoals eigenlijk alles in deze stad. Er is genoeg ruimte om te relaxen in het gras, zoals in Rock Creek Park. Georgetown is een nederzetting met een ontspannen sfeer aan de Potomac-rivier die ouder is dan de stad zelf. Duik een hippe bar in of slenter langs de kledingwinkels. Winkelen doe je eveneens in de wijk Chevy Chase of op een zondagse vlooienmarkt: Eastern Market in Capitol Hill bijvoorbeeld. Vanzelfsprekend zijn er in 'DC' ook allerlei typisch Amerikaanse shopping malls, groots opgezette winkelcentra met zowel goedkope als peperdure merken.
