Deze eilanden zijn ontstaan door voortdurende vulkaanuitbarstingen op een van de "hot spots" van de aarde. Terwijl de tektonische platen verschoven, verschenen er nieuwe eilanden en zo ontstond de iconische eilandengroep die we nu kennen. De jongere eilanden worden nog steeds gevormd door actieve, torenhoge vulkanen, terwijl de oudste eilanden, geërodeerd door de tijd, scherpe bergkammen en diepe, eindeloze kloven vertonen. Deze geologische diversiteit is slechts een van de vele wonderen van Hawaï.Tijdens onze reis ontdekken we zowel beroemde als verborgen schatten op Hawaï - van paden die leiden naar witte, groene en zwarte zandstranden, tot gigantische kraters, bevroren lava meren, spuwende vulkanische kegels, adembenemende watervallen en eeuwenoude rotstekeningen. We wandelen door tropische hooggelegen moerassen, zeldzame nevelwouden en de ruige alpiene woestijn van Mauna Kea, met prachtige uitkijkpunten over de beroemde North Shore. Daarnaast is er volop gelegenheid om te ontspannen op schitterende stranden, waarvan veel alleen door de lokale bevolking gekend zijn. Met een beetje geluk snorkelt u naast zeeschildpadden, kleurrijke tropische vissen en ziet u bultrugwalvissen en spinnerdolfijnen. En als de omstandigheden het toelaten, kunnen we getuige zijn van de uitbarstingen van de vulkaangodin Pele en haar indrukwekkende lavastromen.
